Updated 6/8/21 How do you feel about your boss? If you’re a boss, how would you guess your employees feel about you? In reality, the term boss doesn’t have the greatest connotation. That being said, some people still have great “bosses.” But what makes a boss, employer, manager, or a leader, great?
Great companies offer their employees a lot of great benefits and perks, but what truly makes a company a great place to work is the people who run them. If you have a great boss, then you enjoy going to work. If your boss is awful, then you’d rather be virtually anywhere else.
If you think about the best boss you have ever had, you realize the great ones share several common traits. Here are some of the traits that make a boss truly great.
Great bosses have a lot of passion; they love what they do and they give 100%. Great bosses also sacrifice their own interests for their employees. At times, they even take the fall for them and clean up their employees’ mistakes. The very best of bosses know how to inspire and bring out the best in their employees. The best managers and leaders plainly want to see their charges thrive, which invokes a true desire to try one’s best to not let anyone down.
What makes a boss truly great? Sincerity. Great bosses don’t pretend to be different people in different situations. What you see is what you get, all of the time, because they have a sincere approach. This is the kind of integrity their whole team can count on because they are true to who they are no matter the situation.
Great bosses have enough humility to admit when they are wrong; they’re human like everyone else and they aren’t afraid to ask for help and learn from others. This allows them to be sensitive to employees who need help and understanding when a member of their team makes a mistake. A really great boss is open to working with others and feels the greatest joy and sense of accomplishment when the whole team succeed together.
