Updated October 2021 If you’re in an executive position it’s a given you’re a leader, right? In reality, merely having the title of executive doesn’t make someone a true leader. In fact, in order to be a real leader, you need to develop and cultivate certain traits if you want to be successful.
Randstad, a global provider of flexible work and human resources services, released a study: Workplace 2025*. Among other things, the study covered leadership. It determined five traits leaders must have in order to successfully navigate their companies in the post-digital age.
BASED ON THE RESPONSES FROM THOSE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE STUDY, LEADERS MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING:
- The ability to keep people connected and engaged (76%)
- Be more agile and digitally savvy (77%)
- Drive a culture of innovation, learning and continuous improvement (76%)
- Be adept at risk-taking (60%)
THAT MEANS LEADERS MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING TRAITS IN ORDER TO SUCCESSFULLY ACHIEVE THE ABOVE TASKS:
1. They must inspire others.
a. They are authentic and trustworthy
b. Exude positive energy
c. Clearly state their vision and core values
2. They know how to leverage technology.
a. They link business goals with a tech strategy of the future
b. Train their employees with technology
c. Implement a great user-friendly website
3. They must be able to encourage collaboration.
a. They work to eliminate Silo mentality
b. Build trust
c. Promote diversity
4. They must drive innovation.
a. The set the example and develop innovation-friendly policies
b. Use strategic planning to open opportunities
c. Look to the examples of other successful companies
5. And they know how to manage risk.
a. They develop a strategy to identify and mitigate risk
b. Use automation technology rather than manual processes to update risk registers
c. Are always on the alert by looking for blind spots
If companies are going to be successful in this digital age, they must have leaders with strong digital skills combined with the ability to connect and inspire others.
